Product details
Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases 2019 is the elegant second wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, one of the Médoc’s oldest and most prestigious estates, with origins dating back to the 17th century. Once part of the vast Domaine de Léoville—owned by some of France’s most powerful noble families—the estate was reshaped during the French Revolution and ultimately inherited by the Las Cases family, who retained the heart of the original terroir. Today, the estate remains family-run under Jean-Hubert Delon, upholding a centuries-old tradition of excellence. The vineyards lie within the famed Grand Enclos of Las Cases, a unique terroir marked by its complex layers of Quaternary gravel, sand, clay, and a microclimate influenced by the nearby Gironde River, which promotes early ripening and protects vines from frost. This geological patchwork yields wines of structure, depth, and remarkable consistency across vintages.
The 2019 vintage reflects the resilience of this exceptional terroir, overcoming weather extremes through deep-rooted vines and optimal ripening conditions. A mild winter followed by a cool spring gave way to a hot, dry summer, moderated by wide diurnal temperature swings that preserved acidity and encouraged phenolic maturity. Crafted from younger vines with the same care as the Grand Vin, Le Petit Lion displays radiant fruit and a refined, supple tannin structure. It’s a charming, expressive Saint-Julien with impressive aging potential, offering notes of blackcurrant, and spice wrapped in velvety texture. This wine pairs beautifully with roast duck, grilled lamb chops, or aged hard cheeses, and promises to reward both early enjoyment and cellaring.
