The Domaine Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé Chardonnay 2022 represents the elegant extension of Domaine Leflaive’s Burgundian philosophy into the Mâconnais region. Domaine Leflaive, long celebrated for its mastery of Puligny-Montrachet, has cultivated five prized vineyard parcels in Verzé since 2003. These holdings are certified organic (Ecocert 1992) and biodynamic (Biodyvin 1998), and all vineyard and winemaking activities are meticulously overseen by the Leflaive family. Grapes are harvested by hand, pressed gently in Verzé, and the must is transported to Puligny-Montrachet for fermentation and aging under the supervision of the domaine’s technical team. Aging takes place over 15 to 16 months in a mix of stainless steel (78%), wooden casks (10%), and oak barrels (12%, with 40% new oak), balancing purity with complexity.
The resulting wine is one of striking purity and energy. The 2022 vintage was marked by a hot, dry summer offset by timely rains in August, allowing for excellent ripeness and balance. This Chardonnay shows lively mineral tension, floral lift, and bright orchard fruit notes on the palate. With its crisp acidity and refined structure, it is more approachable in youth than its Côte de Beaune counterparts, yet still nuanced and expressive. Ideal pairings include fresh seafood such as scallop carpaccio or grilled white fish, goat cheese salads, and simple roasted poultry. Its precision and finesse also make it a beautiful companion to vegetable-based dishes like risotto primavera or asparagus with hollandaise.
