Product details

Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne hails from M. Chapoutier, a storied estate rooted in Tain-l’Hermitage since 1808 and guided today by Michel Chapoutier’s biodynamic vision. Drawing its name from the historic Sizeranne family—whose lineage includes Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, inventor of an early form of Braille—the label even features Braille on its packaging as a tribute to that heritage. The 2019 vintage is produced exclusively from hand-harvested Syrah grapes cultivated on the steep slopes of Hermitage, spanning the granitic soils of Les Bessards, the older limestone gravels of Le Méal, and the silty gravels of Les Greffieux. Vinification is traditional: grapes are fully destemmed and fermented in concrete tanks at controlled temperatures (30–33 °C), with regular pigeage for balanced extraction. The wine then matures for 18 months—85% in oak for structure and complexity and 15% in concrete to preserve freshness and minerality.

Visually striking, the 2019 Monier de la Sizeranne presents a deep garnet core with vivid purplish hues. The nose opens elegantly with red fruit aromas—raspberry, blackcurrant—accented by subtle liquorice and peppery spice. On the palate it delivers an elegant entrance, marked by supple yet concentrated tannins and a harmonious interplay of blackcurrant, raspberry, and piquant pepper nuances. The finish is refined and balanced, underpinned by a lingering spicy complexity suited to early drinking but capable of further cellaring. Ideal pairings include venison fillet with red wine reduction, roast beef, grilled lamb chops, or matured creamy cheeses such as Saint-Félicien—dishes that resonate with its earthy, fruity, and savory.
