Product details
Château Rouget Pomerol 2020 is a superb expression of one of Pomerol’s oldest crus, with origins dating back to the 18th century and now guided by the Labruyère family, who have elevated the estate into one of the appellation’s most consistent performers. The 2020 vintage unfolded under remarkable climatic conditions: despite a winter marked by significantly higher rainfall (650 mm vs. the average 430 mm), budburst began early at the end of March. Summer-like temperatures between 22 and 26 °C in April accelerated vine growth, leading to flowering by mid-May across most parcels. Thanks to the deep clay soils of the Right Bank—soaked and replenished through winter and spring—the vines endured the intense summer heat waves without stress. Harvest commenced unusually early, on September 15, concluding by the end of the month. This precise timing yielded fruit of exceptional ripeness, clarity, and energy, marrying power with finesse.
In the glass, the 2020 Rouget reveals a smooth, concentrated core of black cherry, plum, and cassis, enriched by undertones of violet, cedar, and graphite. Its texture is at once round and fresh, combining the lushness of the 2018 vintage with the velvety, refined tannins of 2019. The palate is supple and generous yet lifted by a distinct tension and brightness that carry through the long mineral finish. This approachable and charming vintage is accessible in its youth but has the structure to age gracefully over the next decade. Pair it with braised beef short ribs, roasted lamb with Provençal herbs, or earthy mushroom risotto, and finish with a wedge of aged Comté to bring out its layered complexity and elegance.
