This special 2016 release carries forward a bold chapter in the history of Islay’s famed house, rooted in its storied rugged coastlines and maritime heritage. Built around a base of deeply peated malt, it was matured in a thoughtful marriage of ex-bourbon and “dark” sherry casks, with the latter contributing greater depth of tone and nuance. The result is a rich, naturally colored liquid that leans darker than previous editions, yet retains clarity of character and integrity. It is non-chill-filtered and presents a full body, designed to reflect both the elemental coastal environment and the elegance of carefully chosen wood influence.
On the nose, it begins with earthy peat and weathered driftwood, joined by dried fruit—sultanas, plums—and a dark chocolate richness. A thread of citrus oil (orange peel) weaves through, along with subtle hints of leather, treacle toffee, and a touch of charred oak. The palate is supple and layered: charred wood, café mocha, blackcurrant, and ginger, along with raisin, kola nut, and a mineral seaside edge. The finish lingers long, offering lingering cocoa, warm spice, walnut husk, and a faint mentholic lift that invites another sip.
