Product details
Kikkawa Jozo, the Kanagawa‑based brewery behind the Afuri line, dates back to 1912, but it was under seventh-generation brewmaster Masanori Mizuno—who took the helm in 2012—that the brand pivoted toward bold, high‑acid, food‑friendly sakes. Brewed with naturally mineral‑rich spring water from Mount Afuri and low‑polished (90%) heirloom Omachi rice sourced from Okayama, the No. 77 “Night Mist” is an unpasteurized (namazake), junmai expression featuring the unique polyacidic yeast strain “No. 77.” Its modest 13% ABV encourages a clean, bright finish with lingering layers of depth.
On the palate, “Night Mist” shows mellow yet complex flavors—warm barley‑tea and soft smoky undertones emerge from the lightly milled Omachi rice, while a crisp herbal brightness and melony umami thread through its cloudy texture. The sake is intended to be opened carefully and inverted once to release its namesake mistiness, then served chilled in a wine glass. Its umami‑rich dryness and gentle effervescence pair beautifully with fatty or fried dishes—think asparagus tempura or fish‑and‑chips—as well as sushi, grilled fish, cheese boards, or creamy sauces, where it cuts through richness while complementing savory notes.
