Product details
Port Ellen 34 Year Old 1978 is the 13th annual Special Release from the historic Port Ellen distillery on Islay, bottled in 2013 after 34 years of maturation. The 1978 vintage was matured in a combination of refill American and European oak casks, creating a mature expression that balances Port Ellen’s distinctive coastal character with the influence of extended oak maturation. Port Ellen was closed in 1983, and its remaining releases have become particularly sought after for their rarity and historic character. The distillery itself dates back to the 19th century, with its early history beginning as a malt mill in 1825 before developing into a distillery in the 1830s.
The nose develops layers of syrup, wax, crushed seashells, chamois leather, and brine, with citrus and coastal notes emerging alongside the mature character. The palate combines sweet and salty elements with charcoal, dark wood, green apple, honey, lemon, and lime, while the finish is long, warming, and spicy, revealing cinnamon and mint. The producer’s tasting notes also describe a light, oily, smooth texture with an intense interplay of citrus, honey, chocolate, and coastal character. When it comes to food pairing, consider smoked or grilled seafood, roasted meats, aged cheeses, dark chocolate, or other richly flavored dishes that can complement its layered, mature profile.
