Product details

Cragganmore 48 Year Old 1971 Prima & Ultima is a remarkable single-cask expression that preserves an important chapter in the Speyside distillery’s history. Drawn from the last cask produced at Cragganmore using coal-fired stills before the transition to oil-fired steam heating in 1972, this release comes from a single first-fill ex-Sherry butt and was matured for nearly five decades. Its provenance, extended maturation, and singular cask origin make it an especially distinctive expression within the Prima & Ultima collection, showcasing the character of a historic production era that cannot be replicated.

The nose opens with rich sherry-influenced notes of treacle toffee, prunes in syrup, raisins, and espresso coffee. Full-bodied and thick in texture, the palate develops layers of dark chocolate, wine-soaked fruit, tarred rope, and hessian, followed by controlled wood spice and pepper. The finish is long, fresh, and drying, with a lingering impression reminiscent of leather-bound books. For a food pairing, consider dark chocolate desserts, dried-fruit pastries, aged hard cheese, roasted nuts, or richly flavored dishes that can complement its deep, complex profile.
