Lady of the Glen Macduff 15-Year-Old 2009 Cask #4089 is a meticulously selected single-cask release from the independent Highland bottler Lady of the Glen, known for sourcing rare, character-driven single malts. Distilled on 20th May 2009 at Macduff Distillery—founded in Banff at the mouth of the River Deveron—this medium-bodied spirit is celebrated for its naturally sweet, nutty, and subtly spiced profile. Initially matured in a hogshead and then finished for 20 months in a first-fill ex-Pedro Ximénez (PX) cask, this whisky gained richness and depth without the dominant tannins often associated with such casks. Bottled on 16th October 2024 at a natural cask strength of 55.2% ABV, this release (271 bottles) is unchillfiltered and free of added coloring, embodying Lady of the Glen’s philosophy of craft transparency and terroir-driven authenticity.
The tasting experience is a compelling interplay of classic Macduff character and judicious PX influence. The nose opens with inviting aromas of dried fruit, dark chocolate, and muscovado sugar, setting the tone for a deeply satisfying dram. The palate is rich yet balanced—offering plump raisins, layers of sherry sweetness, hints of nutty spice, and velvety cocoa, all elevated by the PX cask’s contribution of sweetness without excessive tannic grip. The finish lingers warmly, echoing muscovado sugar and dried fruits in a harmonious fade. This whisky pairs exceptionally with dark chocolate desserts, sticky toffee pudding, spiced nut tarts, or a well-aged blue cheese, all of which highlight and complement the dram’s indulgent yet nuanced profile. A rare and rewarding bottling for lovers of PX-influenced Speyside malts.
