Product details
Komasa Jyozo’s Kurano Shikon shochu embodies a rich heritage of traditional craftsmanship, drawing from over 140 years of distillation expertise in Kagoshima, Japan. Made exclusively with locally‑harvested Kogane Sengan sweet potatoes and black kōji, this shochu undergoes atmospheric distillation before maturing for at least three years in unglazed ceramic pots, a process that imbues it with a uniquely mellow aroma and smooth, deep aftertaste. The use of black kōji—a hallmark of Kagoshima’s historic shochu-making tradition—lends an earthy complexity and lends the spirit a rich, rounded character that only time can refine.
On the nose, Kurano Shikon offers luscious notes of roasted sweet potato, fragrant earth, and gentle molasses sweetness, followed by buttery and vegetal undertones reminiscent of fresh greens and muted mint. The palate is luxurious and layered: a silky mouthfeel leads into a mid-palate freshness and concludes with a crisp, mint-kissed finish. This balance of deep, aged sweetness and fresh vibrancy makes it a compelling sipper, ideal neat or with a splash of water to unlock its subtleties. For pairings, it harmonizes beautifully with foods that have mellow richness—think silken tofu with umami-rich dashi, grilled autumnal vegetables, or lightly seasoned fish like buri (yellowtail) tataki. It also shines alongside hearty ingredients like shiitake mushrooms or slow-roasted root vegetables, whose natural umami and earthiness echo the spirit’s deep flavors while letting its creamy elegance sing.
