Hu Gu Jiu’s (widely known as Tiger Bone Liquor) dates back to the Sui and Tang Dynasties over a thousand years ago. Sun Simiao, who was titled China’s King of Medicine during this era, first published his recipe in one of his renowned books, Beiji Qian Jin Yao Fang ("Essential Formulas for Emergencies [Worth] a Thousand Pieces of Gold"). Historically, the tonic was made with tiger bone, other Chinese herbal medicines, and Chinese Baiju (wine).
