Casas del Bosque Carménère Valle del Rapel Reserva 2020 highlights the distinctive character of Carménère from Chile’s Rapel Valley, a region known for producing this variety. Carménère was historically cultivated in France’s Médoc before the Phylloxera epidemic caused most of the original plantings to disappear. The variety was later identified in Chile, where it had previously been mistaken for Merlot, and it has since become an established Chilean variety. For this Reserva, Casas del Bosque sources grapes from loamy alluvial soils with excellent drainage near the Cachapoal River. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are destemmed and crushed into stainless steel tanks, followed by fermentation with selected yeasts and selected lactic bacteria. The fruit is then macerated for an additional seven days to develop structure and longevity. A portion of the final blend is aged for 12 months in second-use French oak barrels, after which the wine is assembled, filtered, and bottled.
The 2020 Reserva shows an intense purple color with violet hues and a lively aromatic profile featuring spice and the characteristic green bell pepper note associated with Carménère, integrated with the influence of French oak. On the palate, it offers a balanced and coherent expression, with a sense of volume and ripeness supported by soft tannins. Its combination of ripe character, gentle texture, and varietal identity reflects the distinctive growing conditions of the Rapel Valley. It can be enjoyed with grilled meats, roasted dishes, hearty vegetables, or other savory preparations.
