Benanti Etna Bianco Carricante 2023 is a luminous expression of Sicily’s volcanic terroir, crafted by one of the region’s most esteemed producers. The Benanti family’s winemaking heritage dates back to the late 1800s in Viagrande, but it was revitalized in 1988 when Giuseppe Benanti reestablished the winery with a focus on indigenous varietals and traditional methods. This wine is made exclusively from Carricante grapes grown on the eastern and southern slopes of Mount Etna, at elevations ranging from 700 to 950 meters. The vines, aged between 20 and 60 years, are cultivated in sandy, mineral-rich volcanic soils and trained using both “alberello” and spurred cordon systems. Hand-harvested in mid-October, the grapes undergo gentle pressing and ferment in stainless steel at controlled temperatures with indigenous yeasts selected from local vineyards. The wine then matures on fine lees before bottling, preserving its purity and enhancing its complexity.
In the glass, the 2023 Etna Bianco displays a pale yellow hue with bright greenish tints. The nose is intense and delicate, offering aromas of ripe apple, white flowers, and subtle herbal notes. On the palate, it is dry and mineral-driven, with vibrant acidity and a pleasant salinity that reflects its volcanic origins. Flavors of citrus, green apple, and a hint of almond culminate in a persistent and harmonious finish . This wine pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes, including grilled or fried fish, seafood, shellfish, vegetable-based meals, and young cheeses . Its crisp and refreshing profile also makes it an excellent choice for by-the-glass service or as an aperitif.
