Highland Park 56 Year Old is an exceptionally mature expression shaped by more than five decades of careful cask maturation and the distinctive character of Orkney. Its story began with whiskies first laid down in 1968, when Highland Park Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion selected ten special casks in 2008 for their unusual complexity and potential for further maturation. These were married and re-racked into first-fill, sherry-seasoned oak casks to continue developing their character. Highland Park 56 comes entirely from one of these specially selected casks: a first-fill American oak puncheon seasoned with sherry, which continued its maturation until it was ready for bottling in 2024. The presentation further reflects Orkney heritage, with its decanter and case inspired by the Standing Stones of Stenness, the ancient Neolithic monument that has stood on Orkney for more than 5,000 years.
The nose is intensely perfumed, with jasmine, lilac, sweet raisins, and cloudy honey. The palate is complex and deeply layered, bringing together citrus and Seville orange peel with delicate spices and a hint of lapsang souchong tea. The finish is exceptionally subtle, combining woody spice, honeyed oak, and fragrant heather character for a long, refined final impression.
