Left Bank First Growths (The Vintage Superstars)
  • Château Latour 2002
    • The Profile: Widely considered the undisputed "Wine of the Vintage." It opens with an incredibly powerful, dense nose of pure cassis, iodine, and graphite. The palate features a potent black-fruit core supported by rigid, high-definition tannins and intense muscular depth.
    • Status: Decant for 90 minutes. It possesses legendary longevity and will continue aging beautifully through 2045.
  • Château Margaux 2002
    • The Profile: An absolute triumph for the vintage. It delivers a remarkably perfumed, silky profile bursting with aromas of wild berries, crushed violets, and sweet cedar wood. It balances the typical structure of the 2002 year with sheer feminine elegance and finesse.
    • Status: Drinking spectacularly right now with minimal decanting required.
  • Château Mouton Rothschild 2002
    • The Profile: Highly complex, suave, and expressive. It features a lovely, fragrant toasty palate showing immaculate balance. Tannins are robust and well-knit but framed by layers of exotic spice and crème de cassis.
    • Status: In its prime maturity window.
  • Château Lafite Rothschild 2002
    • The Profile: A classic, intellectual claret. It trades massive power for mid-weight precision, showcasing graphite, lead pencil shavings, and cool redcurrant fruit. It has excellent acid drive that keeps the finish sharp and precise.
    • Status: Fully open and singing.
  • Château Haut-Brion 2002
    • The Profile: Earthy, savory, and deeply intellectual. The nose is filled with signature Pessac-Léognan smoky depth, warm bricks, cigar wrapper, and black cherries. It is highly texturized with fine, dusty mineral tannins.
    • Status: Peaking now.
The Right Bank & Pessac Challengers
  • Pétrus 2002
    • The Profile: Despite a tougher year for Merlot across the region, meticulous vineyard sorting resulted in a dense, rich Pomerol. It yields a decadent profile of dark cocoa, black plums, truffles, and Asian spices, offering a plush mouthfeel that counters the vintage's natural high acidity.
    • Status: At peak maturity. Do not over-decant.
  • Château Cheval Blanc 2002
    • The Profile: Driven heavily by its high proportion of Cabernet Franc, this Saint-Émilion reveals a highly aromatic blueprint of red licorice, crushed rose petals, and damp leaves. It is lighter in body than more recent blockbuster years but completely seamless.
    • Status: Fully mature; drink over the next 5–8 years.
  • Château La Mission Haut-Brion 2002
    • The Profile: Muscular and slightly more rugged than its sibling Haut-Brion. It bursts with scorched earth, truffle, and roasted meats. It has an intensely savory, broad-shouldered finish.
    • Status: Ready to drink.
The Sweet Finale
  • Château d'Yquem 2002
    • The Profile: A gorgeous, brilliant exception to a mediocre Sauternes year. It delivers intense sweetness perfectly counterbalanced by the vintage’s vibrant, laser-like acidity. Tasting notes include candied apricot, orange zest, honeyed ginger, and white flowers.
    • Status: Virtually immortal; will drink beautifully for decades.
