Dry Creek Vineyard’s 2022 Old Vine Zinfandel is a flagship expression of Sonoma County’s rich viticultural legacy. Founded in 1972 by David S. Stare, Dry Creek Vineyard was the first new winery in Dry Creek Valley following Prohibition, pioneering the resurgence of winemaking in the region. Today, under the leadership of his daughter, Kim Stare Wallace, the family-owned winery continues its commitment to sustainable practices and producing terroir-driven wines. The 2022 vintage showcases fruit from vines averaging over 95 years in age, with some parcels exceeding a century, embodying the depth and complexity that old vines impart. This blend comprises 78% Zinfandel, 20% Petite Sirah, 1% Alicante Bouschet, and 1% Carignane, matured for 14 months in a combination of French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels, 28% of which are new, to highlight the unique characteristics of Dry Creek Valley's appellation.
On the nose, the wine reveals captivating aromas of black cherry, spiced plum, and boysenberry pie, interwoven with hints of white pepper, coriander, and toffee. The palate is rich and layered, offering flavors of blackberry and dried cranberry, complemented by nuances of dark chocolate, espresso, and marzipan. Subtle undertones of cedar and damp earth contribute to its complexity, while well-structured tannins provide a balanced and elegant mouthfeel. With an ABV of 14.5%, this Zinfandel is both robust and refined. Its depth and versatility make it an excellent pairing for grilled meats, hearty stews, or aged cheeses, enhancing a variety of culinary experiences.
