Dry Creek Vineyard’s 2021 Heritage Vines Zinfandel is a vibrant tribute to Sonoma County’s rich winemaking history and the winery’s enduring commitment to quality. Founded in 1972 by David S. Stare, Dry Creek Vineyard remains a family-owned estate, now led by second-generation proprietor Kim Stare Wallace. The Heritage Vines project began in 1982, aiming to preserve the legacy of old Zinfandel vineyards by grafting cuttings from pre-Prohibition vines onto phylloxera-resistant rootstock. The 2021 vintage blends 80% Zinfandel, 19% Petite Sirah, and 1% Carignane, fermented over 11–17 days and aged for 15 months in a combination of American, Hungarian, and French oak barrels, 24% of which were new.
This wine opens with alluring aromas of black cherry, boysenberry, and plum, interwoven with notes of white pepper, cardamom, and marzipan. On the palate, it offers brambly flavors of blackberry and black cherry, complemented by deeper nuances of cedar, fine leather, and dark brown sugar. The wine’s bright acidity and silky tannins provide a refreshing structure, leading to a smooth, lingering finish. Versatile in its pairings, this Zinfandel complements dishes such as grilled beef tenderloin, charred octopus, and spicy crab, and is best served at 18°C to highlight its complex profile.
