Product details
The Rites of Passage Whitlaw 20-Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a rare and meticulously crafted expression from the esteemed Highland Park Distillery, located in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Bottled under the pseudonym "Whitlaw"—a nod to the distillery's proximity to the Whitlaw Hills—this whisky is part of the Rites of Passage Cask Selection Series by Epicurean Selection. Distilled on October 23, 2003, it spent its initial years aging in a refill cask before being re-racked in 2017 into a first-fill Oloroso sherry barrel, enhancing its depth and complexity. Bottled at cask strength (57.4% ABV) on February 5, 2024, this non-chill filtered whisky is free of added coloring, with only 176 bottles produced, making it a coveted collector's item.
On the nose, the Whitlaw 20-Year reveals aromas of musty, rich old apples and apple pie, complemented by notes of doughy sweet cocoa and cookie dough. The palate offers a harmonious blend of minerality, plums, saltwater taffy, and a touch of lime, showcasing the coastal character imparted by its Orkney origin. The Oloroso sherry cask maturation adds layers of complexity, resulting in a whisky that is both robust and nuanced. This expression pairs excellently with rich, savory dishes such as roasted lamb or aged cheeses, and its intricate flavors make it a delightful companion to dark chocolate desserts.
