Originally created in 1862, ocho remained the sole reserve of the Bacardi family for seven generations. It remains in limited supply and can be found in the world's best bars. When crafting ocho the Maestros De Ron Bacardi age the rum in American oak barrels which develops the oak, vanilla, caramel, spice can dried fruit notes and its distinctive smoothness. The rums used to blend ocho are matured for a minimum of 6 years under the intense heat of the Caribbean sun. This tropical climate rapidly accelerates the aging process, especially the evaporation, known as the angels share. This allows the complexity and smoothness of the rum to develop much quicker than spirits aged in cooler climates.
